What Causes ADHD?

Currently the definite cause of ADHD remains unknown but there has been much research done and science has found several contributing factors.

It was first thought that perhaps ADHD could be linked back to children who had a brain injury at an extremely young age. This was disproved when only a small number of children with brain trauma ended up with ADHD. Currently genetics is thought to play a very important role in this and in fact in 25% of the cases family members who report having a young person with ADHD also report a close blood relative with a child that has ADHD.

Smoking is known to be extremely harmful to your health and especially harmful to the fetus when a pregnant women smokes. Studies now show that women who smoke while they are pregnant, imbibe alcohol or do drugs have a higher chance of having a kid with ADHD.

PCB’s which are found in lead are noted as a possible cause of ADHD. It has already been found that high doses of lead can lead one having short attention span along with vicious and cruel behavior.

Another link is shown between amino acids and fatty acids with children who are deficient in Omega-3 seem to have a greater chance of having ADHD. To hopefully counteract this have your children eat more cold water fish such as mackerel, tuna and salmon.

Foods that are high in sugar along with caffeine and food colorings are also thought to be a contributing factor to ADHD. At the very least they may worsen the symptoms. It is recommended if possible to remove foods from anyone who has been diagnosed with ADHD.

One benefit of homeopathic remedies is that they are comparably safer and are not addictive. They seem to reduce a lot of the hyperactivity and impulsivity associated with ADHD.

The main thing is parents must realize this is not your fault. Your child having ADHD is not something you did or did not do. Most importantly love your child and get him the help he or she needs.
