Types of Skin Care Products for Different Purposes

Various types of skin care products are used for different purposes. You can learn more about each one of these below.

Cleansers-These are used to scrub or clean the skin. This is an exfoliation process which helps remove dead skin cells. Other cleansers are intended for removal of dirt, oil, bacteria, and other debris. Certain astringent cleaners also help sanitize and heal dermal surfaces.

Toners-Certain astringent cleansers also serve as toners. Usually this is a product that is applied just after cleansing and before moisturizing. Certain toners act as both a cleanser and a freshener.

Just like other skin care products, specific ones are made for dry as well as oily surfaces. Some toners have been used to help clear up acne problems.

Moisturizers-Sometimes these are called “creams” or “lotions” and basically serve to rehydrate the skin. Some products are designed to also help reduce or eliminate wrinkles while others are designed to help prevent aging. Some moisturizers also serve as sunscreens to help block out UV/UVB rays.

Sunscreen-This is used to help protect the skin from harmful UV/UVB sun rays. This helps reduce chance of skin cancer and prevents people with lighter skin from sunburn. It also helps reduce chance of dark spots. Usually the best sunscreens also are useful as a moisturizer.

Serums-These are a formula of ingredients that helps stop the effects of aging. Certain products have a similar affect as collagen injections. They often have served as inexpensive yet effective alternatives to Botox. Serum ingredients often include hyaluronic acid, Vitamin E, collagen, or alpha hydroxyl acid. Sometimes UV/UVB shielding components are also included in these.

Masks-Often these are used on the face to help rejuvenate the skin. They work as a deep cleanser-even more so than exfoliates. Some types are meant for dry skin while others are meant for oily skin. These are often made at home with ingredients such as egg whites, clay, mud, yogurt, oatmeal, banana, green tea, cat litter (sounds gross but apparently effective).

Essential Oils-Sometimes these are applied to facial mask recipes or they are present in ready-made skin care products. Ingredients such as sandalwood, peppermint, lavender, frankincense, eucalyptus, myrtle, and chamomile are used in these recipes. Numerous other natural herbs such as jasmine, rose, tea tree, and orange are also used for this purpose-which may include replenishment, moisturizing, and cleansing.

Usage

Skin care products such as the ones indicated above are sometimes applied to formulas used for the face. However, sometimes they are created for use on the body.
