Back in the 17th century, sun oven/cookers have been around and are becoming increasingly more popular now for several good reasons. Solar oven cooks by using the light rays of sun and turn it into heat to bake, steam, cook or broil all types of food, from pies, bread, barbeque to roasting an 18 pound turkey. You can cook anything in a sun oven by the power of the sun in the same amount of time that your conventional oven does, if it is a cloud-free day because the sun is the fuel source.

Through these years, it has become more popular because of the following reasons:

1. Solar sun ovens use the free recurring energy of the sun
2. They produce zero pollution and reduce “global warming”
3. Sun ovens do not despoil the value of vitamins and nutrients in our food
4. Food tastes even better when cooked by the heat of the sun
5. Solar Oven does not heat the kitchen like conventional ovens
6. No burnt food
7. No stirring needed while cooking
8. Solar ovens cost only a part of a conventional gas or electric oven.

Over 128 countries are now using Sun ovens. According to the research done by the World Health Organization, half of the world’s population uses the following to cook their foods:

1) charcoal,

2) wood,

3) coal,

4) grass,

5) tree bark or

6) kerosene.

Because of this, we are losing approximately one acre per second of our forests around the world.

There is one large box-type sun oven with reflectors that can cook 1,200 meals per day by using the power of the sun; through this we save about 150 tons of wood per year, resulting in the decrease of 277 tons of carbon dioxide emission annually. There are many different types of sun oven that ranges from do-it-yourself aluminum foil boxes covered by cardboard to a parabolic cooker made from a used satellite dish.

The efficiency solar cooker/oven depends generally on the design and materials used. The most recommended solar ovens are the box type design that are well protected and utilize a tempered glass door to protect the food and help to maintain the heat. A well designed solar oven must reach 350-400 degrees Fahrenheit within 25 minutes and hold a constant temperature throughout the cooking process.

Through the goodwill of several solar oven manufacturers, they contribute a portion of their annual revenue to supply free ovens to thousands of families. By purchasing a sun oven from one of these charitable companies you are saving money, you are protecting the environment, using free renewable energy, cooking healthy and having fun at the same time. But more than that you contribute in decreasing the size of your carbon footprint, but you are providing in the healthy future of a family in another developing country.

Be bright, happy, and healthy. Have fun and cook with the sun and start to face a bright future.
