Colon Cleansing Concerns: Helpful or Harmful?

The controversy regarding colon cleansing never seems to end. It seems that just as many professionals and experts are against it as those who are for it.

I think what I can gather from the arguments before or against it is that it depends upon the regimen used. The type of diet you consume while doing so also makes a difference.

Arguments Against It

Michael Picco, M.D reiterates the opinion of many experts as he says, “The digestive system and bowel naturally eliminate waste material and bacteria — your body doesn’t need enemas or special diets or pills to do this.”

He also mentions that there is not much scientific evidence that either totally refutes or totally supports colon cleansing. What it comes down to is that sometimes it is necessary and other times it is not.

Of course, in some cases it can be harmful too. If you are not sure about whether or not this procedure will help you, it is best if you contact a doctor.

The main concern is that it can cause dehydration, which you already know is a main cause of many other health problems. The most serious of these is kidney or heart disease.

The Case for It

Although many experts for some reason advise against this form of digestive regulation there are also many reasons to participate in such an activity. After all, this process often is required before colonoscopy or other digestive correction procedure.

“If you choose to do colon cleansing, be sure to take these simple precautions…” says Dr. Picco. Then he gives a list of precautions to take as follows:

Talk to your doctor or specialist before you attempt any procedure of this nature. This will help you in the event you are not sure about the healthiest approach to this process.

Study the list of ingredients listed on the product label of a remedy you may use. Even some natural herbs are harmful so be careful you know what you are doing.

Do not listen to lofty claims such as that this procedure will cure a disease or improve your health. It can increase your chances of remaining healthy, but is not the means to justify the ends.

Make sure you drink plenty of liquids while undertaking this procedure. Furthermore, increasing your fiber and exercising regularly will help you even more than would using any colon cleansing product.
